Why Headlights Feel Too Bright at Night (It's Not Just You)

You're on a two-lane road at night. A wall of blue-white light crests the hill toward you, and for two full seconds you're driving from memory - eyes watering, gaze pinned to the fog line, waiting for the world to come back. The car passes. You blink through the afterimage. And you wonder, once again, whether it's the headlights or whether it's you.

Here's the answer up front: it's both, and neither one means something is wrong with you. Headlights genuinely have changed - whiter, more intense, mounted higher on taller vehicles, and often aimed badly - so the nighttime road is harsher than the one you learned to drive on. And at the same time, people are tuned differently on light: the same beam that one driver shrugs off lands on another like a camera flash. One honest caveat before any of the practical moves: if glare has gotten worse for you recently, or comes with halos, starbursts, or a difference between your eyes, book an eye exam promptly. The second story is about you. Light is a sensory channel, and like every other channel, people are tuned differently on it. Some eyes register that oncoming beam, file it, and move on. Others take it like a physical event - the squint, the watering, the long recovery while the afterimage fades. 3. Look at the lane line, not the light. When a bright pair approaches, shift your gaze down and right to the white edge line of your lane and steer by it until the car passes. You'll still see the road and the oncoming car in your peripheral vision, but you keep the brightest part of the beam away from the center of your gaze, where the afterimage lingers longest. It feels counterintuitive for about two drives and then becomes automatic.

4. Design the drive, not just the moment. You often have more control over exposure than it feels like: the highway route with a median beats the undivided two-lane at night, familiar roads cost less than novel ones in the dark, and leaving twenty minutes earlier can mean driving at dusk instead of full dark. On the days when your eyes are already spent, letting someone else take the wheel, or moving the errand to morning, is a design decision - not a defeat.

5. Ask a professional before buying a product. The yellow-tinted "night driving glasses" all over your ads are, at best, a mixed bag - many eye-care professionals point out that tinting cuts the total light reaching your eyes exactly when you need it most. If glare is a real problem for you, put the money toward an eye exam first and ask directly: would a coating, a prescription update, or anything else actually help my eyes at night? The bigger picture
